Can a painting stir our soul to pray?

Religious icons, paintings that represent God, or the saints, have had a long history in the christian church. For many Christians icons are a window into the face of God and they can invite us to pray and to reflect on God's goodness and mercy.
I have always loved religious art and have been especially drawn to icons of Mary, Joseph, and many of the christian saints. Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of my favorite icons and therefore one of the first in my new series Saints and Angels.

The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe I find very moving. It is a story of Juan Diego, a poor man living in Mexico city in the year 1531. Juan is greeted one day by the blessed Virgin Mary who has a special request of him. You can read more details of the story hear at Franciscan Friars

You Gotta Love Color in The Outback

How often do you notice light as you go about your daily activities?

Do you seek out and observe the subtle hues of light as the sun dances across the sky or as she rises or sets? I love light! I think all artists do. For sure light is a key ingredient in any painting. Helena is a small city with lots of heavenly light and with every shade of light you can imagine, hot pinks, warm golds, cool blues, crimson reds, tangerine orange's and royal purples.

Living under the Big sky here in Montana brings surprise and wonder each new day as I seek to create art that brings meaning and joy to my many patrons.

Morning Sunrise

How do you approach a new day?

For me every new day is a new beginning filled with hope, promise and wonder. A good friend of my always says, "Each new day is a new ball game". I have always been a morning person. I love getting up early usually around 5 am. I enjoy watching the light overcome the darkness and hear the quiet of my neighborhood streets. In this early morning cocoon my soul settles and plunges into quiet reflection which brings an awareness of the eternal within the present moment. The original abstract painting above, Morning Sunrise, expresses in color some of the mystery my soul experiences as I awake and greet a new day. I realize not everyone is a morning person. I am sure some of you are night people. However I imagine you experience some of these same moments but at a much later hour. For sure as humans we all need some time and space to be quiet and to give our hearts and minds over to the God who is love as he wraps us in His eternal presence.

As an artist I love challenges and enjoy creating new and different pieces. I am hopeful that the year a head holds many opportunities for deepening my own creativity. I recently was sent this beautiful quote from my friends Douglas and Catherine Wieneke of The Lark Art Gallery in Sedona AZ. The quote is by Corrie ten Boom. and reads. "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its troubles ; it empties today of its strength" These words really resonated with me and they are words I embrace as I walk into 2012. For sure there is wisdom for the soul here. Worrying is so easy to engage in and I for one know it can zap me of the energy and the strength I need to engage in the creative process. I have this quote near at hand in my studio as a reminder when I start to fret about something. I hope you find these words meaningful as well. I look forward to 2012 and the opportunities to embrace peace rather than worry and anxiety. Happy New Year to all and stop by often to see more of my 2012 art.

A Heavenly Cross

A good friend of mine, Melissa Hinnen of Union City, New Jersey, ordered this cross for her new born niece, Heaven. I had a lot of fun imagining an image for Heaven's cross. Flight Into Egypt

My nativity scene depicts the holy family, Joseph, Mary and Jesus under a tree of life as they journey from Bethlehem to Egypt. The child Jesus born in the manger is Emmanuel, God Saves. He will be a ransom for many. He is the Word of God made flesh. It is a miracle that God has come so low to live and breath and to be one of us. Let us rejoice and be glad in this Holy Day. A blessed Christmas to all of you and remember there are 12 days of Christmas so enjoy them all!

This past weekend I hosted the second annual Urban Pastures Holiday Art Show. It was a big success and many people braved the cold and 15 degree temperatures to view my art. That is real dedication and support. Thank you everyone!

This years featured Christmas ornament was the mixed media angel ornaments made of copper wood, acrylic and paper collage. Below are some photos of my Studio/Gallery. As you can see red was the color of the day and I must admit my studio never looked so clean.

The angels are here and ready to fly for the holidays. Many of you have asked me when the 2011 edition would be ready for purchase and I am happy to report that they are now up for sale. I have finished several sets and will be making more in the next few weeks. There are 4 different styles Joy, Glory, Peace/Tall and Peace/Short.
These angels are made of a unique mixed media collection of copper, wood, paint, and paper. The wings and bodies have been cut from two different pieces of wood and then glued together to give the ornament a three dimensional quality. The halos, wings and banners have been made of copper which have been treated with a green patina. The Joy angel has a layer of paper collage under the painting with the words Joy To The World.

Truman The Gentle Feline

Meet Truman The Gentle Feline.

I had the pleasure of creating Truman for my good friends Karen and Chris of Ringoes, New Jersey. Truman has such distinctive markings and from what Karen has told me he had fur softer than lambs wool.

As an artist I found Truman particularly challenging with his distinctive markings and his soft white fur. White is one of the most difficult of hues for a painter to work with. It is actually the colors around the white or in this case the colors underneath the white paint that help to define the actual depth and texture of Tuman's fur.

He measures 15" long and about 7" high. He is a wood cutout painted in acrylics.

A Garden In Mobile Alabama

I have been away from my art studio here in Helena for two weeks. I took all my paints and paintings that were on hand and headed to Mobile Alabama where I spent time with my good friends, George and Leslie Mims. Their charming 1860 home was an ideal setting for creating some new works of art. Reuniting with dear friends, can revive the artistic soul especially when there is lots of laughter and good stories to be shared. Below are some photos of their home and my Dixie Land art studio.

The painting above, "Red Blooms" was created while I was on Leslie's back patio working and gazing out onto her backyard which is laden with trees and brightly colored flowers. This piece is for sale. it measures 12"W x 25"H and is painted in transparent acrylics which allow the colors to glow.

Although I have never met Carson the calico cat in person I can tell that she is a feline of distinction and intelligence. She hangs out with two very bright people, Karen and Chris of Ringoes New Jersey. Carson's intelligence stems from hours of observing humans as they read, write, cook, explore the world of theater and wrestle with the intricacies of human relationships.
I was delighted to take on the commission of Carson. She measures 15 inches high by 6.5 inches wide, painted in acrylics and cut out of birch.

Saint Francis of Assisi Icon

I have always admired and been inspired by the life of Saint Francis of Asissi. His loving service of the poor, his care for animals and his passion for God are all qualities that make this holy man so endearing to me. Francis was born in Italy 1181 and died 1266. He founded the the religious order of Franciscans. Above is one of my wood cutouts of St. Francis set against a metal backdrop which is then mounted onto a piece of wood painted in acrylics. I have several icons in my studio of the beloved saint from Umbria Italy. These images are constant reminders of my call to love God and my neighbors.

How does and artist renew their sense of creativity?

There are days I just have to stop making art and get away from my studio and get a different view and perspective on life. Refreshing ones soul in Montana is not hard. The big vistas and rising mountains have away of enlarging my inner being. I love getting up to Glacier Park and driving along the Rocky Mountain front, the eastern side of the Rockies. As you approach the the town of Browning you enter the Nation of The Blackfeet Peoples. This part of Montana is special as the sweeping rolling plains butt up against the mighty peaks of Glacier and The Bob Marshall wilderness, truly this is a bit of heaven on earth. Below are some photos I took a few days ago as I headed north. I hope that you enjoy them and perhaps they will enlarge your heart and vision

Three Trees In Copper

What makes a surprise?

Threes Trees was commissioned by Steve and Janet Troy of Houston Tx. They were looking for a unique piece for their dinning room wall and fell in love with my new copper patinas and the Tree of Life motifs . Their dinning room wall is long and narrow and we decided that three 14" x 16" panels would graciously fill the space. The trees are filled with birds and some sit in grasses with a distant mountain range in the back ground.

Other than determining the size and the color of the boards that the copper is mounted on these three pieces were a total surprise. After I embossed the drawing onto the copper I placed the copper sheets into a patina bath. Once they are in the bath I had no control over the outcome. Each piece of copper comes out as a wonderful artistic surprise. I must admit that I love this type of process. I am equally amazed at peoples response to the different patinas. Often the ones I enjoy are not always the ones people have requested to purchase. I am curious of the three basic colors I have come to produce which one do you favor the most? You can see the three colors in the last photo below. I would love to get your feedback so just leave a comment in the box below this post.

Painting For A Wedding Anniversary

Marriage is a blessing and a challenge, so say all my married friends. For sure each new year a couple celebrates demands some sort of recognition as they give thanks for the years past and continue to walk forward together in the days ahead.
My friend Joyce commissioned this piece to give to her husband Carl on their 32 wedding anniversary in June. Happy Anniversary Carl and Joyce.

This painting was constructed on three separate wood panels which were then fastened together creating a three dimensional relief. Acrylic on wood 11" x 15"

Art and Friendship

In the the bleak mid winter friendship began.

I recently was commissioned by one of my neighbors here in Helena to make this crucifix, The Risen Christ. This is my African version. It is so interesting the connections and interactions that art can make for us. I started to get to know my neighbors Mike and Georgia through the winter months as we would plod out to our cars and began to de ice and rid them of the mounds of snow. Over time we got to know each other a little better and eventually they made their way here, to UrbanPastures Blogspot and to my website UrbanPasturesArt and saw some of the many types of art I have created. When April arrived Mike asked me about the possibility of my making a Risen Christ for their home. Of course I said yes, in fact I was thrilled. It was fun to plan out the size, the color options and where it would hang with both Georgia and Mike. They were wonderful to work with and as I look back over the past 6 months I am amazed that those snowy January days have brought us together sharing art and friendship. In the bleak midwinter in the dark January evenings a new friendship and a shared love of art began.

The African Risen Christ was first designed 4 years ago as a response to the many sufferings that our brothers and sisters in Africa have endured over the past 50 years. I can not help but think that Christ knows first hand their pain and burdens and faithfully walks with them in their daily journeys.

The Red Nest, An abstracting Painting In A Box

The Holter Museum of Art here in Helena is hosting their 18 th annual art auction tonight, Friday June 10, 2011. This years theme is “A Night in Havana”. As apart of the festivities and along side the auction of major works of art by Montana artists, they have asked 30 local artists to to decorate a Havana cigar box. The word house and home are pracctically the same, a structure that people live in. The word home seems a bit more intimate, more human and harbors the experiences we hold dear with those we live with.
The painting above was commissioned by Ryan of Hoboken New Jersey. The building and his condo are beautiful and holds both meaning and joy to his life and that of his family. Hoboken is a charming community on the Hudson River across from New York City where 40,000 people call home.

Holy week 2011 has begun with Palm Sunday. Millions of Christians around the world will remember the passion, death and resurrection of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In Jerusalem today you can walk the way that Jesus walked after his sentencing by Pontius Pilate to his death on Golgotha. The path is called, The Via Dolorosa, which means "way of sorrows".

As we remember the steps Jesus took, let us also remember those around the world and in our very own neighborhoods who struggle and suffer this day. May our prayers and deeds bring comfort and aid.

A Cross for Isaiah and Joshua

How important is a name?

Our names are very important and special to us. They are the word by which we are addressed and identified. They often carry special meanings for us throughout our lives.

I recently had the pleasure of creating these crosses that were commissioned by Paul and Abby Liu of Jersey City, NJ for their two sons, Isaiah and Joshua.

The name Joshua in Hebrew means God Saves and the name Isaiah means God is Salvation. The designs on the cross are my visual interpretations of Joshua chapter 6 and Isaiah chapter 6 and 11 in the Old Testament.

Each cross is hand cut out of birch, painted in acrylic and measures 12" x 15.5"

Church of the Redeemer Houston Texas

The Kingdom of God is among us.

One does not have to look hard to see God's Kingdom in action. This was and always has been true at the Church of the Redeemer in Houston TX. Over the past 40 years this unique church has made God's presence a tangible reality for those in her parish, her neighborhood and the world at large. One February 28, 2011 the church held it's last Sunday service. People from far and wide came to worship one more time in this beloved sanctuary. The building is no longer structurally sound so she needs to be taken down.
I spent 10 years of my early adult life worshiping and serving in this unique Christian community. It was a beautiful home, one I will always cherish. To mark the passing of this beloved place I made one of my wood cutout paintings. If you would like to own one of these unique keepsakes of the church please email me at MLWhiteNJ@aol.com. How do you spend time playing and making new discoveries?

One of the joys of childhood is to play and to create new worlds and possibilities through the avenues of story telling, imagination, artistic media and found objects. I have fond memories of making wooden forts, mud pies, costumes, paintings, go carts, carnivals and a delicious brew of root beer during my childhood years. The vibrant sense of wonder and joy that comes from creating something new is a treasured gift. The students I worked with for 25 years taught me that even the teacher can make her work a play time, even the teacher can create something new. I cherish that lesson and now as a daily painter I embrace the possibilities of a making new creations. The original abstract painting above, "New Creation", is an expression of that playfulness I seek in my daily painting.

When is enough enough?

I'm sure the answer to that is as varied as there are people in the world. I would imagine the answer also depends on your frame of mind, the subject and your outlook at any given moment.
Ice and snow seem to be abundant in this part of Montana right now. We certainly have had enough from my perspective. However I have come to grips with the fact it is here to stay for at least 4 to 6 more weeks. As an artist I try to take advantage of abundance and incorporate into my paintings. Northern Ice is one such painting that was inspired by a winter storm . There certainly is a time for every season under heaven and no matter how long the season it is ours to enjoy and to accept.

Do you ever have the longing to grow ?

I know it is winter but I am amazed at all the life that I see growing and thriving around my neighborhood. There are the wild birds who endlessly look for seeds from the tall pines. The energetic children happily walking to and from school through the mounds of shoveled snow. The barking dogs drawing attention to the passerby. The occasional furry rabbits scurry to their undercover burrow and the roaming deer going from yard to yard. Life is a daily process and hopefully each day brings healthy growth to the many life forms around us.
As an artist I make it a daily goal to grow as I learn new techniques, new ideas and work with new materials.

Is it possible to gain knowledge and understanding about ourselves from the natural environment in which we live?

I recently had the opportunity to drive along the Rocky Montana Front which is on the eastern side of the Rockies. The weather here can be severe as the winds from the Pacific Coast come whirling over the mountains crashing down onto the eastern plains. This can bring one of natures more breath taking weather formations, "The Squall". A squall is a sudden violent wind that produces rain or snow. It's duration is short and can reach winds over 40 miles per hour. Montana is a colossal stage were Mother Nature actively dramatizes her power on a daily basis. The photograph below is of a sudden squall that formed over the Rockies the day of my drive. Seeing this powerful outburst of wind and snow made me think of how quickly my own emotions can whirl into action and cause a sudden out burst of tears or a rash sequence of verbal responses. But like a squall my emotions can quickly change direction or dissipate. Once the squall has subsided the mountains and the hills are still standing firm. It is good to remember that we are not our emotions that they like squalls can came and go within a few minutes.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to live in such a vast environment such as Montana. Here I can take time to ponder life and watch Mother Nature as she dances on this magnificent stage.

How do you spice up your life?

There is an old American proverb that says, "Variety is the Spice of Life" I have always loved this saying. It seems to apply to almost any subject matter weather you are talking about people or art. I try hard to have a variety of options within a given day, especially in my art work. Changing what I do or how I make something can really energize my work. Somehow it just makes my life a little more fun. Take the tree above. It isn't often that you see a tree rendered in metal on a background of tissue paper. Taking two seemingly opposite materials such as metal and paper can bring a new perspective to a piece of art.
The tree is made of 36 gauge aluminum which is a very heavy metal that can be tooled. The background is a tissue paper collage, sealed with matte medium, that creates a textured surface for painting. The piece measures 12" x 14.5" and was commissioned by Mark and Deborah Meyer of Hoboken, NJ.

As you go about your day take a moment to consider how you might add a bit of spice to to your life. The possibilities are endless and remember I love to read your comments. Sharing your thoughts might just help someone see life a bit different.

How can you heal cabin fever?

Mother Nature has certainly been busy these past few weeks bringing ice storms, deep snows, gale force winds and freezing temperatures all across our nation. If you live in Montana you get use to natures nasty winter battering and cabin fever is to be expected. But this type of winter is unusual for parts of the Midwest, the Eastern Seaboard and the South. People in these more mild climates are going crazy with cabin fever as they wait out Mother Natures furry. So what can you do to cure cabin fever? My remedy would be to gaze into a beautiful painting preferably one who's subject matter is spring flowers or a summer outing at the beach. The painting above, Summer Garden, was painted while I was in the New York area during the January 13 snow storm that brought a foot of snow. I find the winter is a great time to paint subjects that are related to summer or spring. It helps my cabin fever and settles my soul.

Can art bring us peace?

In recent months and in the last several days there have been life threatening events that have caused people around the world both concern and grief, from Tuscon, to New York, to Cairo. Many of our neighbors, friends and family suffer daily from acts of violence. I have come to realize that turmoil or agitation begins in the heart. To seek peace and to be at peace is a daily challenge and discipline for each one of us. For sure it is a noble endeavor to work for peace. As an artist I feel called to work for and to be at peace especially when I create my art. I believe art can be a powerful tool for peace. One that can tame the human heart and bring new hope and vision . My new peace dove is a visual reminder to me to work and to pray for peace in our world. I have a dove hanging in my studio by my painting table. I have made several thinking perhaps some of you may like one as well. Art with a Sense of Humor

Can humor be a sign of intelligence?

I have heard it said that creating word puns can be a sign of great intelligence. I believe that there is some truth in this statement. Taking a word and playing with its meaning in order to create a play on words can be a rigorous brain exercise, one that gets better with practice. Most adults will groan when they hear this type of humor simply because it is often to obvious to them or perhaps they are jealous that they did not think of the pun themselves. Whatever the reason puns are often responded to with a loud groan. Children on the other hand are not so inhibited at such playfulness and are freer to express their laughter over words that seem to tickle their ears and delight their minds.
I'm glad I can still laugh like a child and I hope you can to when you view my artistic pun below, The Moosician.

Giving the Gift of Art

When can the gift of art be most meaningful?

The Drake home is the latest in my wood cutout series. It is the home of my sister and her husband, Curt and Colleen Drake. They truly cherish this stylish 1930 American Craftsman home. They have enjoyed raising their family in this house with all its unique charm and beauty. The side yard is the show of the neighborhood, local residents call it, "The Park". My sister does all the lawn work and keeps the grass well manicured through out the year except when there is snow.

Curt and Colleen did not commission this architectural painting. It was a gift from me in thanksgiving for their constant support of my art over these past two years. They just recently opened their beautiful home for my annual Holiday Art Party. They literally turned their home into an art gallery displaying all of my recent works and invited many of their Helena friends and neighbors for a social afternoon of art and refreshments. I have come to believe Art is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give to others.

Day is Done

In what place do you find yourself at days end?

I often wonder about how much I try to accomplished in a single day. I have come to learn that my expectations are often a bit unrealistic. If truth be told I think my obsession with quantity may obscure some of the most profound joys that a day can hold for an artist.
This original abstract painting, Day is Done, measuring 2 ft x 4 ft, certainly presented to me a lesson in slowing down. I started the painting in a hurry under a time deadline and as it progressed nothing seemed to come together. Once my deadline had passed and the painting was not finished I found myself a bit overwhelmed and disheartened that at days end I had fallen short. My expectations had not been met and I realized that the need to do a lot had suffocated the joy of doing something well.
As the next day dawned I found myself approaching the painting not as a task to be done but rather as a learning encounter which held profound lessons in the art of painting. I cherish a day that ends well, one that has been traveled with the marks of joy and sustained effort, producing new knowledge and artistic vision.

Colors of the Fall Season

What colors do you associate with the season of Fall?

The brilliant colors of this beloved season continue to radiate their glory here in Montana. It has been a gentle warm bath of visual beauty for me these past 4 weeks. As each new day begins I find myself immersed in this intense color storm. I have come to realize that while my eye is instantly drawn to the warm yellows and oranges there has also been the constant participation of the intense blues of the sky. I have come to believe that it is the blue that lays the visual foundations for the spectacular presentation of the warmer hues? Opposites indeed attract and in this visual landscape of autumn beauty they certainly compliment one another.

Under what circumstances does creativity flourish?

I just finished this commissioned piece for Diane Nagy of Houston, Texas. Diane had a definite vision for this painting that centers on an important friendship she has had in her life, a vision that includes horses, butterflies, birds and a heavenly light. While Diane was definite about particular elements of this symbolic painting, she was equally committed to having the painting become a true “Maureen painting.” This type of commissioned work is not only a vote of confidence but can also inspire creative growth.

From clipping wings to spreading wings:

After 28 years of teaching art to young students, I know the value of setting artistic parameters and guidelines for my students. Within a given structure, creativity can blossom and bring new skills to the artistic soul. Diane’s painting indeed provided such a structure for me as a painter. I struggled as to how I would visually represent the elements that she wanted in this painting. Once I realized that these elements were not hindrances but in fact they were the very essentials that could deepen my artist skills and understanding, I was able to relax and to paint. By not fighting the structure, I was able to be inspired by it and to catch a vision as to how I might find the creative license in which to complete this whimsical yet deeply spiritual painting.

Painting With a Sense of Wonder

Is it possible that true freedom comes after total abandonment?

I am used to being in control. I have been taught the virtues of being in control. It’s been quite a surprise to learn the value of the opposite! What happens when an artist surrenders control?

It is only recently that I have begun to explore the world of abstract painting. Painting in this manner has brought me to a place of total surrender and wonder in the possibilities of human creativity. It is not necessarily a comfortable place to enter, but it is a place of discovery, amazement, and childlike wonder.

In abstract painting, the artist cannot set out to control the outcome. Instead the paint and the brush are controlled by the inner spirit that wields its creative force from a source that is utterly foreign to the conscious mind. It is here that the artist grapples with a faith that hopes for that which it cannot see. The reward is a glimpse of the playful energy and freedom of spirit that lie within my own soul as I create from this “uncontrolled” place. I have decided this indeed is the purest face of beauty in the creative process.

A Lesson in Seeing

When expectations lead: why are our assumptions often wrong?

What reward does an artist get from painting a building that has few architectural details? A chance to reflect on making art. At first glance, O’Connell Hall seemed to me to be a symmetrical structure. I quickly assumed that there were 5 windows on either side of the main entrance. However, as I was meticulously creating the drawing for this cut out painting, the windows on the left seemed to be multiplying like rabbits! So I got back into my car and made another visit to the campus with my camera in hand.

As I drove away, I wondered why my brain was so eager to assume the building was symmetrical. Our need to order and to simplify makes life easier, but to sit with complexity is uncomfortable and difficult. In this case, I was expecting architectural symmetry but instead I was given an asymmetrical structure to paint.

Lesson Learned: Resist the seductive pull toward oversimplification. See past my own assumptions.

Treat Time

If you own a dog, you know what a powerful word "treat" is for both the dog and the owner. This word alone can make a tail wag with delight and sheer admiration. Just saying the word brings a smile to the owners lips and brings a command and respect from the ever attentive puppy or dog. They will do anything for a treat and they always eat one as though it was their first.

Fantastic Feathered Flamingo

- Grown flamingos have few natural predators.

- Flamingos live an average of 20 to 30 years.

- They rest by standing on one leg. The “knee” of the flamingo is actually an ankle joint and the lower leg bends forward

-The speed of a flock of flamingos can reach 31 to 37 miles per hour. They can fly 300 miles to reach a new habitat. Grown Flamingos have few natural predators.

Today's Featured Piece is, The Welcome Tree. This is a favorite purchase here at Urban Pastures. I have made several in various colors and shapes. This tree is modeled after the mighty Texas Oak. The background is painted in an array of reds, oranges and yellows with splattered specks of turquoise in the back ground. The Crossing of The Red Sea

This is a commissioned painting by Mr. Jae Bay of New Jersey. Jae asked me to paint a scene with lots of action and an angel for his son's bedroom. As we thought through some of the Old Testament stories it seemed only natural to select the Crossing of the Red Sea. Moses with his hands raised in prayer and the water of the sea is parted so the Children of Israel can walk through on dry land. Pharaoh and his chariots and charioteers are in quick pursuit but they are soon overwhelmed by the water as the sea returns to it's natural state. The angel of the Lord hovers over this dramatic scene guiding Moses and the Israelites as they begin their long journey into the wilderness.

Noah and The Animals

This whimsical original acrylic painting was commissioned by Mr. Jae Bae of New Jersey for his young daughters bedroom. It measures 18"x 24" and is painted on one of my hand made wood panel boxes.
I particularly enjoyed creating this piece as I love animals and the gift they are to us and to our planet. I tried to choose animals that a young girl could delight in. I am especially fond of the Rainbow Trout and the Polar Bears.

The Great Northern Carousel

This whimsical wood cut out was commissioned as a gift for Alan Nicholson, the visionary developer of the Great Northern Carousel. This beautiful artistic carousel sits in the heart of downtown Helena at the Great Northern Center. The carved animals are exquisite and true examples of fine sculpture. No matter what age you are a ride on this carousel is pure pleasure. I'm thankful for Mr. Nicholson's passion and love for the carousel and the means he took to make it a reality for the Helena community. No matter weather you are a visitor or a resident the carousel is a great place to relax, have an ice cream cone and take a ride on one of these beautiful animals.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

I love visiting Yellowstone Park. It's natural beauty sings to my artistic heart. The rich colors of water and earth are colossal on the artistic scale. The largest spring in the park is my favorite, Grand Prismatic Spring. It is Yellowstone's largest hot measuring 370 feet in diameter and can be seen from the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk. The deep-blue color of the hottest part of the pool is offset by rings of yellow- and orange-colored bacteria on the cooler fringes, creating a beautiful prism effect.
This original acrylic abstract is my newest and was inspired by the Grand Prismatic Spring. The deep blues of this thermal spring were a challenge and I am happy with the outcome. There is both a sense of depth and clarity.

Abstract Sunday

The Painter in Her Art Studio

I confess these abstracts are luring me into a real mania. Over the past several months Sunday seems to be the day that I go non stop creating two or three abstract paintings at a time. There is something so freeing about painting this way. Time seems to be nonexistent and the paintings dominate and dictate every shape, color and texture. I often feel as though I'm just along for the ride. The only thing I can compare it to is a beautiful Sunday drive in the mountains with a friend. The miles go by while you soak in the lush scenery, thoughts fade and you are on automatic pilot and your heart and soul take center seat.
Here are a few photos I took this Sunday of my art studio while I was painting .

My Faithful pet bird Bleecker. He breaks into song every time he sees one of these paintings. It is the shinny surface that gets him all excited. What a fan.

My Painting table. I gave up a long time ago trying to keep it fresh and white looking. Instead of cleaning it I just paint it white every few months.

The top of my table looks like a Jackson Pollack original. This is without a doubt the most random style of painting ever imagined.

An elegant Houston Home.

Elegance, charm, and grace describe this beautiful Houston home. Realtor Dru Mims commissioned this 12" x 18" wood cutout for the new owner as a thank you gift for choosing her as his realtor. I had a lot of fun working on this one especially when I put Brownie, the dog, in the painting. These architectural paintings do make nice gifts for either a new buyer or the seller of a home. Brownie is the beloved dog of the owner and she adds that personal touch to the painting. I hope they enjoy their new home and their new, one of a kind, painting for years to come.

Conversion

Conversion is the name of my new blue original abstract painting. I have been thinking a lot these days about conversion and what it means to be more transparent in my own behavior and thoughts. Change never comes easy, that is for sure. But perhaps if we are aware that to be human is to change and to grow it would not be so difficult. To approach ones day looking for opportunities to become something more, to choose life to it's fullest. Perhaps to be aware of the many daily graces that surround us would help us take new steps to be a bit more loving to ourselves and to our neighbors. Such simple awareness could possibly bring a bit more peace to a world where conflicts seems to be the norm.

A Splash of Color

How is this for color? For sure You defiantly can't miss it. I have used so much red lately that I'm now wondering what kind of results I can get with blue. This particular abstract reminds me of the thermal springs in Yellowstone Park. There is also a sense of depth in this one which happened quit unintentionally. Uncontrolled surprises are the joy's of painting abstracts. I love them and they have the same affect on me as when I was 10 years old and discovered a magical world of play outdoors on a cool summer evening. I'm so glad that as humans we have the ability to always retain that childlike sense of wonder and awe.

This is a very special painting that was commissioned by Jennifer Crain of Houston Texas. Jennifer requested an abstract painting depicting 2 cardinals looking off into a heavenly light that would represent eternal life. I was very pleased with how this painting turned out. This commission was a blessing to paint for Jennifer. She is very godly spirit-filled woman whose life of faith is a bright light to many, her family, her friends and those she teaches in the prison ministry. New Beginnings

This robust and vibrant red painting with it's swirling multiple layers of color is a piece of eye candy for any viewer. I have titled it "New Beginnings" because it looks like something is about to be created out of the bright whites and subtle pinks and yellows in the center.
New Beginnings was commissioned by Carl and Joyce Wheeler of Houston Texas. They were wonderful patrons to work with. They had a vision for this painting which made my work both easy and delightful. Carl especially wanted the multiple layers of transparent paints to be visible. Thanks Carl and Joyce! I hope you enjoy your new one of a kind abstract painting for years to come.

Noah and Earth Day

In this scene Noah is pleading out to God to save him, his family, the animals and all the earth from the torrential rains. He sends out the raven to search for dry land. But the raven only returns as there is still no tree on which he can perch. Thus Noah with all of his precious cargo must wait still longer before landing the ark. I'm sure you know the outcome of the story. Noah and his family are saved along with all the animals inside his ark. God was faithful to Noah and in so doing made a covenant with him which still binds to this day. Being this is Earth Day I thought it was only appropriate to read again the story of Noah and God's enduring promise to care for his planet and us. Like Noah, we are to care for God's creation as best we can but at the same time rest in the knowledge that God is ultimately the creator and the one who sustains all life in creation.

I just finished this commissioned piece for David and Anne Gains of Sugarland Texas. This is a wood cut out scene that is mounted on a 12"x 12" box frame and painted in acrylics. David particularly liked this version of the Noah story because it shows Noah pleading to God for his salvation and safety.

Come Holy Spirit

This Pentecost cross was created to celebrate the confirmation of 6 special people on the day of Pentecost, May 23.
The cross measures 8" x 10" and is painted in vibrant reds and oranges and a dove is placed in the center to symbolize the coming of the Holy Spirit upon God's people.

It is my prayer that these 6 special young men and women may indeed be graced with the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, courage, knowledge, understanding, right judgement, reverence and awe in God's presence all the days of their lives.

Alleluia Christ is Risen!!!

It is now the tenth day of Easter. This joyous season of Resurrection and new life is celebrated for 50 days. It just so happened that this Risen Lamb cross was the focus of my painting over the Easter weekend. It was commissioned by Nicky Glen, of Richmond Texas, for her husband David Glenn, who is currently working in Saudi Arabia. The cross is cut out of 3/4" birch plywood and painted in acrylics. The lamb has a heavy textural compound that gives it a three dimensional effect. The cross measures 15.5"w x 21"L.

This is the 100th post I have entered here at my blog. Those of you who know me personally know that crafting words is not one of my strengths. However after one hundred blog entries I am learning new things every entry and there is still much to understand about the art of writing.

Summer Sky

Summer Sky is my latest abstract painting. It measures 12"x 15" and is painted in acrylics with a clear non yellowing varnish. I love creating abstracts because each one is a surprise when it is finished. No matter what I think it may turn out like I am always surprised when I finish that it is no where near my initial conception. I enjoy working with color especially colors that are intense and vibrant. Daily I am attracted to the vastness of the sky above me here in Montana. This dramatic canopy is always changing and carries a color palette that no artist can truly match. A "Drama Queen" she is with her towering cumulus clouds of dusty pinks and vibrant oranges set against a deep blue back drop. I'm hoping to create many abstracts with the heavens as my inspiration. Angel of Prayer

Every day is the day to pray. I do believe there is an angel of prayer for each one of us as we walk this journey through life. These current days filled with worry and woe concerning war, poverty, politics, natural disasters, economic failure, broken relationships and family stress can almost break our hearts. Be assured our prayers are heard and we are not alone. God is faithful to lead and guide us as we attempt to walk in his light.

The Texas Oak

During my visit here in Houston I have been reminded once again of the majestic beauty of the American Oak Tree. The mighty oak is one of the most impressive visual images I have of Houston Texas. I lived in this lush environment for 10 years during my early adult life. While the heat and the humidity are a challenge, the people and the abundant green foliage are beautiful beyond measure. Texas hospitality is warm and gracious. I believe there are folks here whose hearts are as big as the state itself. I have often compared many of my Texas friends to the mighty oak tree. They are strong, well grounded, with deep roots and have on many occasions welcomed and provided shelter for those in need.

The tree above was created with my Texas friends in mind. It measure 12"x 18" is hand built of pine and birch and painted with acrylics. The tree is a single piece cut out and placed on top of the abstract background creating a three dimensional relief.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Urbanpastures is working this month in Houston Texas. Yes, I have flown south to paint for 3 weeks. While I am here I am having a small art show. I thought what better piece to create than The Alamo. This was a fun wood cut out to make because I know many people have a deep love for Texas history and the Alamo is a central piece of that history.

Evening Solitude

I just can't stop thinking about those wonderful Ironwood trees. I made one in January for my good friend Emily and had such a good time creating it that I just had to make another. Here is one I made last week. I set the tree against an abstract painting reminescent of the early evening sunset with a full moon rising. I particularly enjoy these moments when the noises of the hectic day settle into the calmness of the approaching evening. I often find those evenings filled with wonder, gratitude and peace. They are a gift and a delight to the soul.

A California Bridge Surounded in Texture

This original acrylic painting, of a sea side in California, is my latest commission. It is rich in texture and color. The background is full of tissue paper and painting compound giving the surface a rich texture and a three dimensional surface. The couple who ordered this piece, Jenn and Andrew Groff of Jersey City, love California and have fond memories of their vacation under the warm summer sun. The inspiration of this view came from a beautiful photo that Andrew took. I loved painting this scene and the freedom to put my own interpretation on it. Thank you Jenn and Andrew. Desert Sunset

Happy Valentine's Day. Desert Sunset is my latest contemporary abstract painting. My color palette certainly seems to be geared in the red hues these days and so I thought this would make the perfect Valentine post. I love the color red especially when I am painting with my fluid transparent acrylics. They are awesome because they allow you to see through each layer to the colors below.
This piece measures 13"x 18"and is mounted on hardboard and plywood.
